Poesia n°179.

TELL me, was Altgeld elected Governor?
Ditemi, fu eletto governatore Altgeld?
For when the returns began to come in
Quando cominciavano ad arrivare i primi risultati
And Cleveland was sweeping the East,
e Cleveland stava strapopolando nell’est,
It was too much for you, poor old heart,
era troppo per te, povero vecchio cuore,
Who had striven for democracy
che avevi combattuto per la democrazia
In the long, long years of defeat.
nei lunghi, lunghi anni della disfatta.
And like a watch that is worn
I felt you growing slower until you stopped.
Tell me, was Altgeld elected,
Ditemi, Altgeld fu eletto,
And what did he do?
e cosa fece?
Did they bring his head on a platter to a dancer,
Or did he triumph for the people?
o trionfò per il popolo?
For when I saw him
Perchè quando lo vidi
And took his hand,
e gli strinsi la mano,
The child-like blueness of his eyes
i suoi occhi di un blu infantile
Moved me to tears,
mi commossero fino alle lacrime,
And there was an air of eternity about him,
Like the cold, clear light that rests at dawn
come la luce fredda, chiara, che resta all’alba
On the hills!
sulla collina!
