Poesia n°127 – Spoon River. “Eugene Carman” – traduzione in italiano con testo inglese

RHODES’ slave! Selling shoes and gingham,
Schiavo di Rhodes! Vendendo scarpe e tessuto,
Flour and bacon, overalls, clothing, all day long
For fourteen hours a day for three hundred and thirteen days
For more than twenty years.
per più di vent’anni.
Saying “Yes’m” and “Yes, sir” and “Thank you”
Dicendo “Sissignora” e “Sì, signore” e “Grazie”
A thousand times a day, and all for fifty dollars a month.
Living in this stinking room in the rattle-trap “Commercial.”
And compelled to go to Sunday School, and to listen
To the Rev. Abner Peet one hundred and four times a year
il reverendo Abner Peet centoquattro volte all’anno
For more than an hour at a time,
per più di un’ora a volta,
Because Thomas Rhodes ran the church
perchè Thomas Rhodes reggeva la chiesa
As well as the store and the bank.
come il negozio e la banca.
So while I was tying my neck-tie that morning
Così mentre mi annodavo la cravatta quella mattina
I suddenly saw myself in the glass:
improvvisamente mi vidi allo specchio:
My hair all gray, my face like a sodden pie.
i miei capelli tutti grigi, la mia faccia come una torta rancida.
So I cursed and cursed: You damned old thing!
Così bestemmiai e bestemmiai ancora: maledetto vecchiaccio!
You cowardly dog! You rotten pauper!
Cane vigliacco! Miserabile schifoso!
You Rhodes’ slave! Till Roger Baughman
Tu schiavo di Rhodes! Al punto che Roger Baughman
Thought I was having a fight with some one,
pensava stessi litigando con qualcuno,
And looked through the transom just in time
e guardò attraverso la traversa giusto in tempo
To see me fall on the floor in a heap
per vedermi cadere ammassato sul pavimento
From a broken vein in my head.
in testa mi era scoppiata una vena.
