Mickey M’Grew – poesia 132 Spoon River – testo inglese con traduzione in italiano

IT was just like everything else in life:
Era come tutto il resto nella vita;
Something outside myself drew me down,
qualcosa al di fuori di me mi trascinava in basso,
My own strength never failed me.
la mia forza non mi abbandonò mai.
Why, there was the time I earned the money
C’era stata la volta in cui mi guadagnai il denaro
With which to go away to school,
con cui andare a scuola,
And my father suddenly needed help
e mio padre improvvisamente ebbe bisogno d’aiuto
And I had to give him all of it.
e dovetti dargli tutto.
Just so it went till I ended up
E così infine mi ritrovai
A man-of-all-work in Spoon River.
uomo tuttofare Spoon River.
Thus when I got the water-tower cleaned,
E quando dovetti pulire la grande torre dell’acquedotto
And they hauled me up the seventy feet,
e mi tirarono su per 70 piedi,
I unhooked the rope from my waist,
sbloccai la fune della cinta,
And laughingly flung my giant arms
e ridacchiando allargai le mie braccia giganti
Over the smooth steel lips of the top of the tower—
verso le labbra d’acciaio lisce della cima della torre-
But they slipped from the treacherous slime,
Ma scivolarono sul perfido fango
And down, down, down, I plunged
e giù, giù, giù, affondai
Through bellowing darkness!
vero l’oscurità urlatrice!
