Poesia n°161. Enoch Dunlap – traduzione in italiano con a fronte testo inglese

HOW many times, during the twenty years
Quante volte, durante i vent’anni
I was your leader, friends of Spoon River,
in cui fui vostro capo, amici di Spoon River,
Did you neglect the convention and caucus,
siete mancati all’assemblea e al direttivo,
And leave the burden on my hands
e avete abbandonato l’onere nelle mie mani
Of guarding and saving the people’s cause?—
di custodire e salvaguardare la causa del popolo?-
Sometimes because you were ill;
Qualche volta perchè malati;
Or your grandmother was ill;
o perchè vostra nonna era malata;
Or you drank too much and fell asleep;
o perchè eravate troppo ubriachi e vi sentivate assonnati;
Or else you said: “He is our leader,
o altre volte diceste: “È il nostro leader,
All will be well; he fights for us;
tutto andrà bene; combatte per noi;
We have nothing to do but follow.”
non dobbiamo fare altro che seguirlo.”
But oh, how you cursed me when I fell,
Ma oh, come mi malediceste quando caddi,
And cursed me, saying I had betrayed you,
e mi malediceste, dicendo che vi avevo tradito,
In leaving the caucus room for a moment,
perchè mi assentai dalla riunione per un attimo,
When the people’s enemies, there assembled,
quando i nemici del popolo, lì riuniti,
Waited and watched for a chance to destroy
aspettavano e spiavano un’occasione per distruggere
The Sacred Rights of the People.
i sacri diritti del popolo.
You common rabble! I left the caucus
Marmaglia ignorante! Lasciai la riunione
To go to the urinal!
per andare in bagno!
